San Francisco, CA – March 22, 2012 – Sunrun, the nation’s leading home solar company, today announced support for an industry-led initiative known as Green Button, inspired by a White House call to action. Green Button allows consumers to download detailed electricity usage data in a simple, standardized format. Sunrun will be able to use Green Button data to size home solar systems more accurately for customers and quantify the financial value of solar once a system is installed.
“The uniform availability of consumption data allows homeowners to easily assess the value of going solar,” said Sunrun Director of Business Development Ethan Sprague. “Similar to the way we can see how many cellphone minutes we’ve used at any given time to choose an appropriate phone plan, Green Button lets families see what the right solar plan is for them and how much value they’ll get out of it.”
Sunrun invented solar power service as a way for homeowners to switch to solar without having to own the panels or spend thousands of dollars upfront. Sunrun owns, insures and maintains the solar panels and installs them on a homeowner's roof. Families pay a low monthly rate for clean energy, fixing their energy costs for 20 years. Now the nation’s leader in residential solar, Sunrun installs over $1.5 million in solar every day and completes one rooftop installation every 11 minutes of the business day.
“Green Button will let homeowners understand their consumption patterns and make more informed choices about their source of energy based on both cost and environmental impact,” continued Sprague.
Sunrun estimates the promise of Green Button, combined with new finance models and streamlining efforts like uniform solar permitting processes, can remove 60 percent of the solar “hassle factor” that consumers face today. With advancements such as allowing consumers to transmit data directly to third-party providers, Sunrun anticipates integrating Green Button data directly into its software to continue to improve the entire customer experience.
This week the White House announced nine additional utilities have committed to adopting Green Button capability on their Web sites. These commitments bring the total to more than 15 utilities across California, Texas, New England, the Midwest and the Mid Atlantic, covering more than 27 million households.
