Sunscreen? Check. Swimsuit? Check. Potato chips? Check. As I start to slip into a long weekend frame of mind, is there anything you’re not remembering? It’s Memorial Day we’re celebrating here people. Remembering is the whole point.
The brave men and women who gave their lives for our country should always be in the front of our minds, especially as we enjoy a break from our hectic lives. But if you’re like me, sometimes it takes an official reminder to consider that the underlying importance of a federal holiday like Memorial Day goes beyond reaping a free vacation day. Take a moment this weekend to consider a few things you could do to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us.
1. Participate in the National Moment of Remembrance
On Monday at 3pm local time wherever you are, pause in silence for one minute to honor those who have given their all for us. It’s only one minute, but still a great way to demonstrate your patriotism.
2. Buy a “Buddy Poppy” from the VFW
You’ve probably seen the little red paper poppy flowers being sold for $1 by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. This simple item has helped raise millions of dollars which goes to veterans’ rehabilitation and service programs, and partially supports the VFW National Home for orphans and widows of our nation’s veterans.
3. Write to a member of the military
Logon to A Million Thanks, an organization which encourages people to write a letter of gratitude to a member of the military who is serving us overseas. It’s easy and fun, and you never know how much getting a letter of thanks might mean to a soldier far from home.
4. Do the right thing for US energy security
The fact that so much of our energy comes from overseas puts our country in a precarious position and our troops directly into harm’s way. The majority of the natural gas used by our utilities to make electricity doesn’t originate in the United States, and if you switch to solar and reduce your consumption of fossil fuels, you can help to stabilize our energy supply and help the environment at the same time.
5. Help out your local economy
There are numerous businesses in your area that could benefit from your patronage. You wouldn’t think it at first, but going solar at home creates local jobs and helps local businesses, no bones about it. Solar installation jobs can’t be outsourced, and if you go solar, you make a direct impact in your community and your local economy.
