SunRun is celebrating the end of a successful year for residential solar and we’re looking forward to 2012. As we get ready to start a new year, we wanted to share with you the challenges and opportunities we anticipate for solar in 2012.

1. Solar gets even cheaper:  The installed cost of solar dropped by more than 30 percent in the past year and price decreases will continue.  Solar panel prices could drop an additional 20 percent by the end of 2012, putting solar in reach for more American families.

2. A Darwinian year: Industry consolidation is inevitable in 2012 as incentives disappear and oversupply pushes manufacturers to cut prices. While difficult, this consolidation will clarify the industry’s enduring leaders.

3. Solar leasing options trump cash:  As Americans learn they can install solar on their roofs without buying the panels, they prefer it.  This option, known as solar power service or solar leasing, now makes up nearly 60 percent of the home solar market in California and lets American families lock in low electricity rates. Expect it to approach about 75 percent of the California solar market in 2012, with other states close behind.

4. Solar for the middle class: Analyses from PV Solar Report show median-income zip codes are driving solar adoption in California and will continue to lead the charge in 2012.  The trend is spurred in large part by solar power service companies that help mainstream consumers put solar on their roofs without a big upfront cost.

5. Streamlining brings big bucks to communities:  Low-cost improvements in solar processes like permitting can add billions of dollars to local economies.  According to economic consultancy AECOM, simpler solar permitting processes could generate over $5 billion in additional growth for California, an increase of nearly 20 percent relative to the status quo.  Streamlined permitting could drop the installed cost of solar by 25% in 2012 while generating thousands of jobs in local communities.

6. Tech breakthroughs beyond panels: Breakthroughs in non-panel technologies will make solar deployment and design easier and cheaper.  Coupled with declining solar panel costs, these supporting technologies will make solar even more affordable and scalable.

Mercury Solar Systems is expanding into Massachusetts, where it will offer SunRun solar power service to homeowners. Mercury announced its expansion plans on Thursday, Oct 13, saying it will establish its new office in the city of Waltham. This latest expansion marks the third state in which SunRun and Mercury work together to make solar affordable for more homeowners.

This latest expansion of solar in Massachusetts highlights how welcoming the state has become to renewable energy. The strength of the Commonwealth Solar Program and a thriving SREC market mean demand for solar is growing, and offer fertile ground for new marketplace competition.

SunRun installers already operating in Massachusetts include Alteris Renewables, Cotuit Solar, Next Step Living and Sunlight Solar Energy. Alteris Renewables provided the installation for Frank Lepine, a SunRun customer who was recently featured on WWLP-TV22 news. Frank went solar for a deposit of $1,000 and now saves about $150 a month on his energy bills. He expects to make his investment back in only seven years. Happy 2011! Believe it or not, another year has gone by and it has certainly been a good one for solar power. Instead of doing a weekly news round up, we thought it would be fitting to provide a solar news year in review.

Total Global Gigawatts

This year, the amount of photovoltaic solar installed globally, reached 15 gigawatts. This momentous number can be admired in the context of the global solar market being only 170 megawatts in 2000. The strong PV demand in the European market, in particular, Germany accounts for a large portion of global PV installations, and the substantial growth in U.S. and China PV markets has also contributed to an impressive year for the solar industry.

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, the U.S. photovoltaic market has grown at an average annual rate of 69% over the past ten years. By the third quarter of this year, the U.S. had already achieved a record year for PV installations with 530 MW. In terms of green job growth, the number of people employed by the solar industry has doubled to over 100,000 in the past year, and is expected to increase by 26% in 2011.

Coal Update

For two consecutive years, no new construction began on a single new coal-fired power plant in the U.S! This is very promising news for the clean energy world, as making the switch from dirty fossil fuels to alternative energy sources will significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2002, 36,000-MW of new coal-fired power had planned to be installed by 2007. Only one-eighth has been completed. According to Deutsche Bank predictions, the portion of electric power generated by coal will drop from 47% in 2009 to 34% in 2020 and 22% in 2030.

A Green White House

This year, the Obama Administration became the ultimate solar proponents by announcing the installation of solar panels on the White House rooftop.  The photovoltaic panels and solar water heater will generate electricity and heat water. In an announcement, United States Energy Secretary Steven Chu stated:

“Around the world, the White House is a symbol of freedom and democracy. It should also be a symbol of America’s commitment to a clean energy future.”

Solar Policy Highlights

Californians successfully defeated Proposition 23 during the November mid-term elections. This win was very important, as the out-of-state oil company funded ballot initiative would have suspended California’s greenhouse gas regulation laws. Also, if Prop. 23 passed, hundreds of thousands of green jobs would have been threatened.

In other good solar policy news, the 1603 Federal Tax Grant Program was extended. The Grant Program subsidizes up to 30% of clean energy installations, and has created many job opportunities and facilitated immense growth in the solar industry. The extension of the Grant Program will help SunRun build 36,000 more home solar installations and generate 6,000 new jobs.

With such a successful 2010 under our belts, we expect that the solar industry will continue to grow exponentially, by increasing the number of clean energy installations, generating new jobs, and lowering our global carbon footprint.
