Everyone knows California is a great state for solar. But, California is a big state, made up of many counties and even more cities. Do you know which cities and counties are the top places for California home solar power?
The California Solar Initiative, part of the Go Solar California campaign started in 2007, keeps track of the home solar power systems installed in California (excluding data from municipal utilities, which aren’t part of the CSI), but this dataset is enormous and hard to decipher. But, we here at SunRun think being able to understand home solar growth is important. That’s why we’ve taken comprehensive data from the California Solar Initiative and made it more accessible and easier to understand. SunRun’s ranked the top California solar cities and counties, based on the number of solar homes added in 2010 to May. We also have an additional page for the top solar cities in Orange County. We’ll continue to update these pages over time so please check back frequently!
Here are some fast facts about the top CA solar cities and counties.
The recent coal mining disaster and the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico have been the most recent reminders that dirty energy comes with frightening costs outside of our utility bill — human lives, environmental cleanup, and crippled local economies. If the disasters taught us anything, it’s that we need to recognize the true costs of our power and act. It’s time to embrace clean, renewable energy.
We need to move away from relying on coal and oil to power our homes. SunRun is raising awareness about home solar through a new Facebook Cause, the Solar Roofs Challenge, to reach 10,000 new solar homes in 2010 in the United States. SunRun already has thousands of home solar customers across the nation. We’ll keep you updated on the progress as we come closer to the nationwide goal.
We have a choice. Home solar can reduce up to 50% of a home’s pollution every year.
SunRun’s goal is to make home solar simple and affordable for homeowners. We’ve updated our website with a new simple look and feel, and we’ve streamlined it so that you can find just the information you need to make an informed decision about whether solar panels are right for your home, including:

Whoever knew airplanes and home solar went so well together?
Yesterday, on Earth Day, KFSN ABC-30 News featured an airpark in Fresno, California that decided to get home solar with SunRun. In Sierra Sky Park, home solar panels line the roofs of houses and airplane hangers; at least 12 out of the 60 homes in the residential airpark have home solar panels, and many of them have gone solar with SunRun, and our partner, Real Goods. After one family decided to get home solar with SunRun, the others soon followed. One homeowner’s electric bill went from as high as $500 to $5.91 for one month! In addition to the savings, for these homeowners in Fresno, solar with SunRun was a way to ” save money and be green.”
Check out the Fresno ABC news 30 interview below with SunRun solar homeowners Steve LaFerrera and Bill Darnell, and Real Goods representative, Tom Cotter.

Ever wish you could actually see solar booming across the country? With the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s new Open PV Project, you can actually visualize the growth of solar across the nation, from 2000 to present. NREL just launched its NREL solar map, an amazing PV solar progressive heat map that lets you see solar installations through time, in bright bursts across the states. You can also access data on the number and size of installs, solar capacity, and cost per watt for solar for the various states — all over time.
The NREL solar map/PV project is a collaboration among government, industry, and the public — users are able to add their own PV installation data and see PV data entered by other users! The NREL solar map is a step in the right direction to opening access to energy information for everyone.
Check out NREL’s PV Project map and see for yourself how quickly solar is growing all across the U.S.!

The importance of a clean energy economy was visited time and again in President Obama’s State of the Union address. With such strong support coming from the White House, we here at SunRun are very excited about what 2010 will bring for solar. SunRun’s president, Lynn Jurich, spoke to Fox Business on Thursday about the future of the solar energy sector, as well as the hundreds of green jobs the solar industry has been able to create.
Not only has home solar become an affordable option for millions of homeowners, but it has also been able to create clean, permanent jobs. According to research, for every six homes that goes solar, a green job is created — and that’s not including the other jobs created down the supply line. And these are jobs created within the nation – here and at present.
Watch the Fox Business clip to hear more about green jobs, federal subsidies, and the future of solar.
