It’s report card season, again!
Last week, we were aghast to discover that the ASCE gave the U.S. a failing grade (D+) in terms of its energy infrastructure. With our increasing consumption of energy, waiting for the much-needed improvements in the electricity grid would only prove frustrating.
However, there’s good news! A new report released by the Network for New Energy Choices, Vote Solar Initiative, Interstate Renewable Energy Council, and the Solar Alliance, called “Freeing the Grid,” graded each of the fifty states on their net-metering policies. Net metering allows homeowners to earn credits on their utility bill for the electricity generated by their solar panels, allowing their meter to effectively “spin backwards.” It’s what makes home solar not only feasible but viable.
The good news? The report shows that the U.S. has become much more supportive of renewable energy, such as solar, over the years. In 2007, only 13 states received an A or a B in net-metering, but this past year, 2009, 27 states were A or B students! SunRun states all made the cut — California, Colorado, and Arizona all received A’s and Massachusetts received a B. Tape that on your refrigerator!
