Founded in California in 2001, Akeena Solar’s philosophy is simple: producing clean electricity directly from the sun is the right thing to do for our environment and economy. The company’s integrated solar panel system, Andalay, is the only solar panel system with integrated racking, wiring and grounding, which is pretty darn cool. Akeena Solar has grown to become one of the largest national installers of residential and commercial solar power systems in the United States, and is a publically traded company. SunRun started working with Akeena Solar in early 2008.
groSolar was founded in Vermont in 1998 by Jeffery and Dorothy Wolf, who continue to manage the company today. groSolar’s mission is to deliver renewable energy solutions to homeowners and businesses in an effort to fight global warming. groSolar recently acquired the residential division of Borrego Solar, one of SunRun’s first partners in California, so they already feel like family. groSolar installed solar hot water heaters at Fenway Park in Boston, and also works with SunRun in Massachusetts.
With roughly 4,000 employees, PetersenDean has grown to be the largest privately held roofing and solar contractor in the United States. In 2007, PetersenDean entered the solar installation business with their acquisition of MC Solar, a Northern California-based solar installer. PetersenDean is based in the Bay Area, but have operations throughout the US and thousands of happy customers. In addition to traditional solar electric panels, PetersenDean also specializes in tiles for solar roofing, also known as building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV).
Real Goods Solar is the original one-stop shop for all things solar, and they started encouraging California families to make the switch to solar power when the word “green” was still just a color. Founded in 1978, Real Goods Solar was the first company in California to make solar panels and related equipment available to homeowners. Real Goods Solar recently joined forces with several other solar installers in California (including Regrid Power, Carlson Solar, Marin Solar, and Independent Energy Systems) to expand their service area in the state. Real Goods Solar has been a SunRun partner since early 2009.
REC Solar was founded in 1997 in San Luis Obispo, California. One of the nation’s largest photovoltaic installation companies with several million watts of solar installed, REC Solar currently serves Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, New Jersey, and Oregon residents and business owners. REC Solar prides itself on being a local business in all of the communities where they offer solar electric systems. REC Solar was one of SunRun’s first installation partners, and was also our partner for our first community solar program in San Jose in early 2008.
Dan Thompson founded SPG Solar in 2001 to help homeowners and businesses avoid costly utility rate increases by installing solar electric systems. Since then, SPG Solar has installed over 1,200 solar electric systems and continues to grow its customer base in California and other western states. SunRun and SPG have been working together since early 2009 and we’re happy to be their partner. In addition to working with businesses and homeowners, SPG Solar has also worked with numerous wineries to slash their electricity costs with solar.

What happened to Verengo Solar? I thought you worked with them. They have left me hanging. Panels on my roof are still not connected.
Hi Theresa — you’re right, we do work with Verengo. This blog post is from quite awhile ago when we didn’t work with them yet. I will have your account manager follow up with you about connecting your solar panels. You can also always call us at 415-982-9000 and press 2 for customer care.
