Sunrun fans know solar. We’ve asked our fans on Facebook to confirm or deny some of the more common solar myths out there, and they’ve done great work! Check out the second half of solar myths put to the test, or catch up on the first half before reading further.
Solar myth #5: Solar is still so expensive that it will never be able to pay for itself.
Conditional. Third party solutions are helping make solar more affordable than ever, but purchasing a solar system is still cost-prohibitive to most homeowners. Incentives and rebates are still powerful market drivers that increase the possibility of savings.
Solar myth #6: When the lights go out, my home is still powered.
Busted. Safety and technical requirements dictate that a grid-tied solar system shut down during a utility power outage. The system shuts down in order to prevent the possibility of dangerous live wires. Preventative technology is available, but is still cost-prohibitive to most homeowners.
Solar myth #7: Solar will look ugly on my roof.
Busted: Many of our fans say they can’t see their solar panels from the ground, and so don’t have to worry about how they look. Many others simply love the way their panels look, and are proud of generating their own power at home.
Solar myth #8: Installing solar will increase my property tax.
Busted. Solar lease and power purchase agreements will never raise your property taxes because the solar system on your roof is owned by the company it’s being leased from. Since it’s not actually a part of your property, it won’t result in higher taxes. Homeowners in California should also know that state legislation exempts all solar installations from property taxes.
Some of our fans reported their property taxes going up anyway. Sunrun was able to provide those fans with documentation stating that their taxes should not go up due to solar installation, and encouraged them to contact their local tax assessor. Success!
