SunRun has recently been featured in two great news pieces on the growing number of affordable solar options, creation of green jobs, and Proposition 23 in Metropolis Magazine and on ABC Los Angeles News.
The Metropolis article focused on SunRun’s goal to make solar a mainstream consumer product. SunRun President and Co-Founder Lynn Jurich highlighted the increasing affordability of home solar, as well as the industry’s jump to 39% of installed solar capacity in the U.S in 2009. If this is any indication of solar trends in the future, widespread adoption is in sight within the decade. More consumers are turning to solar power because of the new financing options that are available. As power purchase agreements and leases make it more affordable to install residential PV systems, switching to solar becomes a realistic and compelling option for homeowners.
Despite California’s progress towards making solar a mainstream staple, the current California ballot initiative, Proposition 23, could undermine the invaluable success of California’s clean energy sector. We talked about Prop. 23 in an earlier blog post but, just to recap, Prop. 23 seeks to suspend California’s clear air law regulating greenhouse gas emissions until unemployment rates drop to 5.5%. ABC Los Angeles News interviewed Lynn regarding SunRun’s opposition to Proposition 23 at last week’s Solar Power International event. If passed, this proposition will threaten cleantech companies such as SunRun and jeopardize hundreds of thousands of green jobs. In this news segment, Lynn spoke about the significant job creation that SunRun has already generated and the current momentum of the green job industry in California.
“Through our network we employ about 3,000. That is up from 1,800 last year, so we have already helped create over 1,000 jobs with solar energy,” said Lynn.
We’re happy to see that working towards SunRun’s goal of making solar affordable is both fueling the economy through job creation as well as lessening our dependency on fossil fuels.
