Battery Backup
A battery back-up isn't required or even recommended for most solar electric systems.
The cost of solar is high, even without a battery back-up. Batteries only make solar even more expensive and they last a maximum of 5-8 years - even when you take care of them correctly. They also make solar systems less efficient, which means you won't get as much energy out of your system as you otherwise would.
Like car batteries, solar system batteries need careful handling, storage, and maintenance. The fluid in these batteries is very corrosive and needs to be checked. Plus, batteries must be ventilated and protected from cold weather.
In almost all cases, the routine maintenance and the money you'd have to pay every 5-8 years to replace your battery pack far outweighs any benefits you'd gain by having them.
A much better option is to use your local electricity grid as your "battery." When your solar electric system produces more energy than your home is using, the excess goes back onto the power grid where it will be "stored" for later use in the form of credits from your utility.
And, if your system is completely disconnected from the power grid, it won't be eligible for the California solar rebate.
