How Home Solar Panels Make Energy
How do home solar power systems produce energy?
Every home solar electric system has 5 essential parts:
- Solar panels
- Inverter
- Racking
- Wiring
- AC and DC safety shut-offs
Many solar systems also have these:
- Solar energy monitor (recommended)
- Net meter (recommended)
- Battery back-up (not recommended)
A home solar electric system works when sunlight hits the panels. The panels capture sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. Then, the electricity goes through an inverter which converts the DC electricity into alternating current (AC) electricity. AC electricity is what you can use throughout your home.
More Detail for the Techie Types
Solar panels are made up of many solar cells. Each solar cell is made of a semiconductor material so it can conduct electricity.
When a little packet of energy that comes from light - called a photon - hits a solar panel, electrons break away from the atoms of the semiconductor material and start flowing. And, an electric current is created.
This direct current (DC) electricity flows through the inverter where it's converted into alternating current (AC). AC electricity is what we use to power our homes.
