Maintenance Costs
Solar electric systems can cost a lot to maintain over 25 or 35 years.
Most solar electric systems have no moving parts so they don't have many mechanical problems. But, a study by two solar experts revealed about half of systems currently installed are not performing properly.
Many problems can require maintenance:
Dirty Panels
Dirt, dust, ash, and bird droppings can decrease the amount of energy they produce. Panels need regular scrubbing with cleaning solution so they produce as much energy as possible.
Cracked Solar Panels
Although many solar panels are guaranteed to withstand 3/4 inch hail at 120 MPH, moisture can get into panels and make them crack.
Corroded Electrical Connectors or Panels
Corrosion can cause problems with the electrical circuit.
Short Circuits
Short circuits can occur when squirrels or other rodents chew through wires. Over time, the wiring insulation may become worn or cut and will need to be replaced.
Bird Nests
Birds will often build nests under solar panels
Tree Growth
Trees and shrubbery can easily grow to shade a solar system. This will make your solar system produce a lot less energy than it should.
Panel Theft
Solar panel theft is becoming more and more of a problem. It is recommended that you write down all the serial numbers and add the system to your homeowners insurance.
Worn Out or Broken Inverters
The inverter is a finicky piece of equipment and will need to be replaced several times before your solar panels wear out. Inverters cost several thousand dollars, not to mention the labor costs of an electrician to set it up.
