Most home solar power systems have racking, wiring, and safety shut-offs that are referred to as 'everything else', or sometimes the 'balance of system'.
Racking
Traditional roof solar panels are installed on racks that keep the panels about six inches off the roof surface. This allows for air circulation so that the solar panels don't get hot and become less efficient.
Wiring
There are lots of wires that go into a solar electric system to hook up the solar panels and the inverter to the utility grid. All the wires are contained in a metal conduit so they aren't exposed.
Safety Shut-Offs
The AC and DC safety disconnects allow one to shut off the power between the home solar power system and the electrical system so that solar and utility maintenance can be performed safely.
