PACE Programs

Property Assessed Clean Energy

Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) programs are municipal financing programs for home energy efficiency and solar. They allow homeowners to purchase a home solar power system with an assessment from a local or regional government clean energy fund (PACE fund). The assessment is added to the homeowner’s property tax bill and is due at the same time.

Currently, most PACE programs are on hold due to negotiations with federal agencies. However, in Sonoma County, California’s PACE program is operational and homeowners can purchase SunRun Total Solar - Prepaid through the Sonoma County PACE program.

SunRun believes in the future of affordable solar and supports programs like PACE when the programs are designed to use funds wisely. One way to ensure appropriate use of funds is to include solar power service (also called third-party-owned solar) in PACE programs. The Sonoma County program offers a strong example of this. Several benefits of including the 3rd-party option in PACE programs are:

  • Spreading PACE funds to more homeowners due to the smaller upfront assessment required for third party systems compared to a direct purchase
  • Smaller assessment payments for homeowners
  • No additional homeowner expenses for maintenance, insurance and repair because most solar power service providers, like SunRun, include these benefits
